Could a building be both Figure as well as Ground?

Can it be two-faced and respond to two contexts and divergent requirements?

Can spaces of interiority, such as sports halls, assume an urban role of exteriority?

How can a building dissolve into the landscape and yet assert its presence as an object?

Can the ‘New’ be grafted onto the ‘Old’ with the least amount of intervention?

How can structure, space, and skin come together to create one unified urban object out of several disparate parts?

How can a building respond to several contexts by using one unified strategy?

How does one synthesise a new spatial order through the act of grafting?

Does a graft also metamorphose the host?

How much should one intervene in a heritage structure?

Is it possible for a building to retain its antiquarian roots and yet be a site of exploration for contemporary formal explorations?

How can the narrative of a museum intertwine across centuries and also across landscape and building?

Praveen Bavadekar, in his review for Five Architectural Fables by Edgar Demello, opines how the architectural fables ingeniously critique urban design through non-human perspectives, transforming complex environmental and design challenges into provocative, imaginative storytelling.

Praveen Bavadekar reviews the Apple Store TRX in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, designed by Foster+Partners, as a revisit of Miesian glass box design, blending millennia-old spatial techniques with a century-old architectural obsession.

This talk delves into how urbanity pervades through the Indian landscape beyond its big cities, where homogenising forces of commerce and a seeping consumer culture contests with deeply rooted, and sometimes historical, structures of power and community. Through their work in three medium sized cities a few hundred kilometres from one another, Bavadekar attempts to see how cities come to define their urban identity.

“DeGraaf seeks to lay bare the vacuousness and the fluff that’s behind most buildings built today”, Praveen Bavadekar reviews ‘architect, verb’, By Reinier De Graaf

Praveen Bavadekar discusses how history is often taught linearly, focusing on chronological facts and artifacts, disconnected from other subjects like design and construction. He suggests history could be more integrated, fostering connections between different periods and disciplines. Bavadekar highlights examples of architects critically engaging with the past to inform their present and future work, advocating for a more dynamic and relevant approach to historical studies in architecture.
